In 2005 the Substance club night celebrated its 10th Birthday. To mark the occasion, various elements of the night were hosted across 3 rooms. The main room played host to DJ Premier (Gang Starr) and the Substance live band. The cinema room hosted a preview showing of DJ Supreme’s ‘Turntable Trixters - the Hi Jack story', a film by Birmingham’s P Kalsi. The third room featured original artworks commissioned for the night with the kind support of Carhartt, visuals of which appear below.
I greatly regret not having been more active with my camera over the years. Club nights by their nature come and go and eventually so do your memories of them (some fade faster than others). Here’s a selection of photos I’ve managed to pull together. Thanks to those who contributed these. If anybody out there has others (particularly of the early shows from ’95 – ’00) then please get in touch! Chris

We’ve been fortunate to have some talented illustrators and designers bless us with their skills over the years. Below are a selection of my favourites;
These are probably my all time favourites. These great illustrations put together by Chu were the product of many an afternoon’s brainstorming and tea drinking. The result was this comic strip told over the course of five months, a loose metaphor for the evolution, commercialisation and ultimate destruction of the music we love (perhaps)!
